Why I started Guided Rehab

My name is Will Kouao, a BSc Hons-qualified Exercise Physiologist with Level 4 specialisations in Cardiac rehabilitation (BACPR) and GP referral.

I have always had a strong passion for sports, having competed in hockey at an international level. This experience led me to pursue a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, where I developed a deeper understanding of the role exercise plays not only in performance, but also in health.

I began my career as a fitness instructor, where I quickly realised that my true passion lay in helping individuals with long-term conditions who need exercise to improve their quality of life both physically and mentally. This led me to transition into a GP referral role, where I spent 3 years working with a wide range of clinical populations. It was during this time that I developed a particular interest in clinical exercise supporting cardiac patients.

Motivated to deepen my expertise, I went on to complete further specialist training in cardiac and cancer rehabilitation. Through this work, I have consistently seen the powerful impact that exercise and lifestyle modification can have on individuals' health, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

My journey then progressed into working within cardiac rehabilitation in the NHS. During this time, it became increasingly apparent that there is a gap in long-term support following Phase 3 cardiac rehabilitation. Many individuals still feel anxious, lack confidence, and are unsure how to continue exercising independently. For some, a public gym environment is not appropriate, and access to ongoing specialist support can be limited.

This is what led me to establish Guided Rehab - a service designed to bridge that gap, providing safe, accessible exercise tailored to the individual.

My approach

I believe exercise should be accessible, purposeful, and tailored to the individual, not only to support recovery, but to improve overall quality of life.

Guided Rehab's aim is to help individuals continue to build confidence, improve physical capacity, and support long-term health.

Accreditations and qualifications

I hold a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science, providing a strong foundation in human physiology, biomechanics, and exercise prescription.

My BACPR Level 4 qualification in cardiac rehabilitation enables me to design and deliver evidence-based exercise programmes for patients with a wide range of cardiac conditions, from post-heart attack recovery to heart failure management.

My Diploma in Exercise Referral (RQF) covers the broader scope of clinical exercise, enabling me to work with patients referred by GPs for conditions including diabetes, COPD, hypertension, and arthritis.
